NFL, Electronic Arts unveil Madden '18 competition

  • NEW YORK -- NFL fans and gamers can engage in their approach to the Super Bowl -- should they be good enough in the newest edition of "Madden NFL 18."

    Electronic Arts along with the NFL on Madden Mobile Coins they're teaming around create an internet tournament involving all 32 teams .

    It helps make the NFL the 1st pro sports league inside the U.S. to commit every one of its teams to your competitive gaming program, as well as a massive esports competition.

    NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell calls competitive gaming and esports "one of the extremely exciting solutions to engage a bigger, younger and digitally savvy NFL audience." EA CEO Andrew Wilson says his company as well as the NFL consider their partnership "to an unprecedented level."

    Chris Halpin, the NFL's chief strategy officer and senior v . p . for consumer products, says esports competitors generally are hard to reach via traditional media.

    "It's great they've an affinity for football, but we still have to make sure we're engaging them about the new platforms," Halpin said.

    The Madden NFL Club Championship is offered to any player with a web based account and also the game developing Tuesday on Xbox One and Playstation 4.

    Players will pick a common team, then compete online against that team's other fans -- New England Patriots fans may go up against other Patriots fans, as an example -- having an undetermined volume of top players advancing from that round.

    Each NFL team then will hold a live event for that top gamers who advanced on the online round. That event could be in the team's stadium as well as other landmark in the area.

    EA plus the NFL ran an identical competition a year ago on a smaller scale. Halpin said the teams involved "loved it, loved the model," but one from the Madden Mobile Account was that "my favorite team's not inside.

    "We need all 32 (teams), and for your fans, externally, it can make more sense if every team is represented," he stated.
