Prescott learned that sports weren t glamorous early on

  • This story originally ran in January 2016, when Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott recalled stories of his mother during his high school recruiting days. In celebration of Mother s Day https://www.cowboysdaclub.com/xavier-woods-jersey-c-19.html, we re bringing it back!

Cowboys rookie quarterback Dak Prescott won t compete in a football game this weekend while the Cowboys have a bye week for the wildcard round of the NFL playoffs, before hosting the divisional round game at AT T Stadium on Jan. 15.

So what to do in the free time?

Tony Romo went to Cabo San Lucas during the Cowboys 2007 bye week. Prescott joined the Dallas area show Inside the Huddle with former Cowboys fullback Tyler Clutts this week instead.

    He had much to say.

Among the topics discussed his late mother s mentality raising Dak and his two brothers, the Cowboys greats he s looked up to and the hard work that goes into preparing for each NFL game.

You just want everyone to be happy and just go make that play that they ve been working all week to make, Dak  Byron Bell Jersey  said of cheering his teammates on. We re putting in the same work each and every day. We re all coming in at the same time.

It s not all glamorous. It s a lot of hours, it s a lot of pain, it s a lot of sweat that goes into it. But when you re doing it with guys that share the same common goal, that believe in each other https://www.cowboysdaclub.com/jourdan-lewis-jersey-c-21.html, that are selfless, that are putting other people first? It makes it fun.

Prescott learned that sports weren t glamorous early on, he said. With brothers five and six years older, he was often much younger than the kids he played sports against. Be it basketball or football, Dak was getting beat up by older kids. A couple times, he went running home to Peggy in tears.

My mom told me, If you re going to do that https://www.cowboysdaclub.com/duke-thomas-jersey-c-20.html, either stay in here or don t play with them at all, Dak said. I said, I m going back out there.

That perseverance was a trait Peggy embodied for her boys through the years. She worked three jobs to support her sons and always aimed to please, he said.

I m so thankful to go through everything I went through at a young age, Dak said. Not coming from much but being showed that true hard work and putting other people first, what it can get you, from my mom.

And Peggy was unwavering in her principles. When Nick Saban then the football coach at LSU, now at Alabama visited the Prescotts high school to recruit Dak s older brother Jace as an offensive lineman, Jace was out sick and missing practice.

Their coach called Peggy to let her know of the visitor.

He s sick, she told the coach.

It ll only take 15 20 minutes, the coach pleaded. Just bring him up here. This is the Nick Saban. This is the LSU. I mean, we re in Louisiana, this is the head coach of the LSU Tigers.

Dak said his mom couldn t care less.

She said, I don t care if it s Bear Bryant or Tom Landry. My boy s sick and he s not coming up there. That s how she was.

Peggy also raised her boy to be a Cowboys fan, so Dak doesn t take lightly the chance to meet Cowboys greats. He played running back, fullback and linebacker growing up and dreamed of following in Emmitt Smith s footsteps.

Emmitt was the man, he said. Loved Emmitt. Then now being able to just meet him, talk to him it s been awesome. Michael Irvin, Troy Aikman, the triplets obviously ... It s been fun.

Smith said the pleasure was his after Prescott sent the Cowboys ex flowers when he lost his mother.

I just want to say thank you, man, Smith said via a video on Twitter. You sent flowers to me and my family during our time of need with the loss of my mother. Just shows what kind of character you have.

And yet, Prescott didn t pick Emmitt when asked who would be his top choice of Cowboys greats to play alongside. He loves playing with Pro Bowl receiver Dez Bryant right now he can throw it the farthest on the team, Dak said after Dez s trick play touchdown to Jason Witten vs. Detroit last month but Prescott admits he d love to play with another 88.

I d probably say Michael Irvin, Prescott said. Knowing him and knowing what the success he had it d be fun.
